These natural-style maracas belong to the percussion instrument group. The extended handles allow players to hold them with ease. When shaken, the seeds against the smooth timber outer casing create a delicate, soft sound. 

Maracas are usually played in pairs. They have, and are, used in religious and sacred ceremonies around the world, particularly in dance or healing rituals.
