Weaving Fish Small

This weaving fish is a hands-on creative arts resource designed for children to explore weaving and fine motor skills. The fish is a frame only, allowing children to weave using wool, fabric strips, raffia, paper, or natural materials. It can be used in several ways, including guided craft activities, open-ended art experiences, or as part of an under-the-sea learning theme. Once complete, the fish can be hung as a decorative display to celebrate children’s learning and creativity.

This activity provides an opportunity to introduce children to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander weaving practices, which have been used for thousands of years to create functional and cultural items such as baskets, nets, and tools. Through discussion and exploration of weaving, educators can support children to develop an appreciation for traditional knowledge, natural materials, and cultural practices. This links to the EYLF, supporting Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world, as well as Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners, through hands-on exploration, problem-solving, and creativity.
