Noongar Moort Peg Doll Family by Simone Hills

The design on my peg doll family represents traditional ochre body paint and traditional tools, with each and every family being individually unique, I invite koolangka ‘kids’ to share and explore through play about their families, culture, traditions and create opportunities to discuss and learn about the shared responsibilities within Aboriginal Families; Nans, Pops, Aunties, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters, Cousins, Extended Kinship Family. 

I was raised in a big family, My beautiful Nan and Pop had 10 children, I grew up with many Aunties, Uncles and Cousins and extended family around. 

When I was 8/9 years old my Mum, Dad, Brother and I moved from Albany to Rocky Gully (- small town in WAs south west, the town where my Nan and Pop also raised my Dad, Aunties and Uncles).

While living in Rocky Gully some of my Uncles would come and stay while doing seasonal work and My Brother and I would often come to Albany and stay with our Aunties, Uncles and Older Cousins. While in Albany our Aunties, Uncles and Cousins would share the responsibilities of looking after us both, caring for us, teaching us and loving us as they do there own children. These memories were my inspirations whilst creating designs for my peg doll Noongar Moort ‘Family’.

• Maawit ‘Baby’ artwork design features tracks of Yongka ‘Kangaroo’ and Koomal ‘Possum’ representing the fur wrapped around Bub sleeping soundly in coolamon/yandi
