Boomerangs and Waterholes Game by Gerald McGregor

The classic game of noughts and crosses (tic-tac-toe), reimagined with a meaningful Indigenous flair, this beautifully crafted piece features original artwork by Aboriginal artist Gerald McGregor. Designed to be both a functional game and a cultural keepsake, it brings storytelling, connection, and creativity into play.

Made from natural jute, the game base measures approximately 45cm x 45cm. The nine playing squares are carefully machine stitched, while the striking boomerang and waterhole designs are hand-appliquéd using soft cotton fabrics. The set includes ten gently padded cotton playing pieces and a large zipped pocket (20cm x 20cm) to keep everything सुरक्षित and organised. It folds neatly for easy storage, making it perfect for both home and classroom use.

Aligned with EYLF outcomes, this game encourages turn-taking, problem-solving, and social interaction, while also providing opportunities for children to engage with and appreciate Indigenous art and culture.

Artist & Cultural Significance
Gerald McGregor, born in 1973, is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artist with family ties to the Burketown region of Far North Queensland, from the Gunndaleedie tribe. Coming from a family rich in artistic talent, Gerald has developed a distinctive style that blends traditional dot work and animal imagery with contemporary influences, reflecting the perspective of a modern urban Aboriginal Australian.

Over the past decade, Gerald has sold hundreds of artworks both across Australia and internationally. His pieces are highly sought after and valued by collectors around the world.
