The Making of the Murrundi Storysilk Set by Emma Stenhouse

The Murrundi Playsilk Set celebrates the beauty and story of the Ngarrindjeri Country, where Murrundi means “Murray River.” Inspired by the ancestral being Ngurunderi, who formed the river while chasing Pondi (the Murray Cod), this set invites children to explore deep connections to land, story, and play.

Packaged in a natural calico bag with an accompanying story card, the set includes a richly illustrated Playsilk and soft sensory companions — Pondi (Murray Cod), Pelican, and Silver Fish — made with crinkle and textured materials to engage touch, sound, and imagination. Designed for early childhood environments, it supports sensory exploration, storytelling, and dramatic play aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework outcomes.

Created in collaboration with Ngarrindjeri artist and educator Emma Stenhouse, each piece is grounded in her journey of self-discovery, family connection, and love of Country. Guided by strong women in her community, Emma’s work weaves learning, culture, and creativity — offering children and educators a meaningful way to experience the continuation and sharing of culture through play.
