Meet Platy McPlatface, our Platypus Hand Puppet: the waddling, flapping, beak-sniffing superstar of the classroom! Part duck, part beaver, part “what even is that?”, this platypus is basically a zoological party animal. With a tail perfect for dramatic thumps, a beak made for mysterious sniffs, and webbed feet primed for impromptu dancing, it bursts into playtime ready to confuse, charm, and make everyone giggle uncontrollably.
Inspired by Australian wildlife and First Nations storytelling traditions, this platypus helps children explore curiosity, connection, and imagination, all while occasionally pretending the carpet is a river, the pencils are fish, and the other puppets are definitely rival platypuses competing for attention.
Platy McPlatface is a member of our eco-friendly puppet crew—made from recycled plastic and 100% mischief-ready! These puppets have been given a second chance at life: once bottles, containers, and other bits of plastic, now they’re wiggling, squawking, and flapping their way into storytime. They’re basically superheroes in disguise—saving the planet one giggle at a time while teaching kids that even trash can have a second act.
EYLF silliness in action:
-
Outcome 1 – Identity: Children gain confidence as they become the platypus—flapping, waddling, and making very questionable “platypus noises.”
-
Outcome 2 – Connection to the World: The puppet sparks curiosity about Australian animals, wetlands, and the quirky genius of nature, while highlighting connections to storytelling about Country.
-
Outcome 3 – Wellbeing: Hilarious waddles, webbed-foot stomps, and dramatic beak gestures boost joy, laughter, and social engagement.
-
Outcome 4 – Learning: Imagination and problem-solving flourish as children invent adventures, navigate imaginary rivers, and figure out exactly what this platypus might be up to.
-
Outcome 5 – Communication: Every squawk, flipper flop, and silly “quack-no-not-quack” noise builds expressive language, turn-taking, and storytelling skills.
Perfect for storytime, dramatic play, or whenever the classroom needs a waddly, beaky, tail-thumping bundle of chaotic fun. Warning: may cause uncontrollable laughter, spontaneous webbed-foot dancing, and a sudden urge to question “Is that really a duck? Or a beaver? Or… magic?”
