Time for a fun fact 'Wonder Explorers' 

Did you know that plant or flower pressing is an art form originating in Japan, known as 'Oshibana'? Samurai in the 16th Century would practice Oshibana to promote patience, concentration, and a connection to nature.

In the 1800s, the West increased its trading with Japan, and Oshibana soon became a favorite hobby among women.  It has been a long-held belief that flowers have hidden meanings and were often used as an alternative language. Very handy in a very conservative era. The art form allowed the artist to preserve memories through their artwork.

Oshibana soon became a popular method for creating souvenirs and mementos from religious sites. Today, museums around the world keep these artworks.

We also think it is an interesting way to explore alternative language-rich environments. Oshibana provides an opportunity to explore Learning Outcome 5 and offer children an alternative way to express themselves while exploring different cultures and developing an appreciation for nature. There are also opportunities to introduce maths and science into the setting. 

This handmade, wooden, multi-layer flower press makes the traditional craft of flower pressing an easier way to preserve the beautiful colours and shapes of the natural environment around us.

With this child-friendly press, children can place species of flowers, herbs, or grasses between the recycled cardboard and timber. Once the species are in place, the press is reassembled by tightening the wing nuts. 

This resource invites children to explore and connect with the natural world around them while engaging in nature and sustainability. This experience also provokes creativity, science, technology, and fine motor skills.
