The name of this authentic Indigenous mat design says it all – gather your friends, family, students or colleagues and sit together for a yarn. Who knows what you might learn? The Gatherings Aboriginal design recycled mat, in on trend black and white, is comfortable for sitting and walking on, durable and long-lasting, whilst also looking amazing in any home, office or school.
Gatherings is designed by respected Australian Aboriginal artist De Greer Yindimincarlie, of the Wiradjuri Nation in central New South Wales. This reversible play mat or camping mat includes many different Aboriginal symbols. At this gathering, you’ll find men sitting around campfires, women talking at campsites, digging tools, spears, boomerangs and coolamons. Can you spot them all?
This vibrant design is ideal as a teaching tool for group time in a classroom, helping children learn more about their own and other cultures while they read, eat or play. It’s a useful introduction to Indigenous symbolism in art and opens young minds to the world of storytelling through pictures. Older children can extend their learning and look for similar symbols in other Indigenous art or stories.
Like all our recycled mats, Gatherings is hard wearing and easy to clean, making it ideal for classrooms, libraries or any community space. As one of our more compact mat designs, Gatherings is lightweight for folding or transporting, so it’s easily moved from the story corner to a shady spot for lunch.
These mats are a great way to teach the meaning of Aboriginal symbols in daily class and can be used as extension activities to many other key learning outcomes.
Gatherings Aboriginal design recycled mats in vibrant black and white can be enjoyed in the home, office, classroom or anywhere you want to bring people together.
